Siutated in the heart of the Korean alps, the village of Hoenggye is the perfect place to base yourself for an extended winter holiday in Korea.

A 2.5 hour drive from Seoul, Hoenggye is a hop, skip and a jump away from a number of resorts in the Pyeongchang area, giving you variety and choice of resorts to dance around weather and conditions. With plenty of accommodation options, eateries, bars, entertainment venues and all the other conveniences a town has to offer, Hoenggye has it all!

Hoenggye comes alive in winter, with neon lights flashing furiously in the countless number of ski shops that line the roads in to town and out to the resorts. The main street is Daegwallyeong-ro, with a good array of everything from clothing to hardware stores. The bus terminal is located next to the post office across from the police station; head east into town and you will come across the town square where you will find a medical clinic, cafes, karoke bars, a chemist (drugstore) chicken and hoffs bars (pubs that serve fried chicken and beer) and a taxi rank that operates 24 hours.

For all your grocery needs, you can't go past our fave, J-Mart. It's always a bit novel walking into a supermarket where no-one speaks the same language as you, but that's part of the adventure! J-Mart has a good range of fresh fruit and vegetables (can be a little expensive), fresh meat and fish, local food staples and Western delights to suit your culinary needs. Yes, you can get olive oil, tinned tomatoes and pasta for a lovely big spag bol if you need a break from rice! You can also purchase beer, wine (yeah!) and the local brew, soju, at very reasonable prices.

Hoenggye still has all the charm of a local village with the occasional international backpacker wandering the streets. Mostly it's locals going about their day-to-day business or local Koreans coming from Seoul to enjoy their winter sports. Be prepared to battle with a few language barriers in some places but be patient as the locals are so friendly and accommodating, and go out of their way to help in any way they can. And as Hoenggye will be the Korea Snow Base Camp for our 2014 /15 Snowcapades, we are looking forward to some of that Korean hospitality!
