No need to feel guilty when booking that snow holiday with family and friends, because a new study has found that even one day of skiing is great for health and wellbeing.

Korean researchers claim the big smile you can't wipe off your face after charging all those big powdery runs is enough to send your happiness and wellbeing index in a positive direction, even if you only get to the slopes a few times a year.

Researchers from Yonsei University conducted a survey of visitors at Korea's major ski resort and survey participants were evenly spread between skiers and snowboarders. The happiness and wellbeing of the survey participants were determined by assessing their sense of pleasure, their level of engagement in the activity, and the sense of satisfaction they reported after venturing out on the snow. The skiers and snowboarders who encountered most benefits were those who got "into the flow," meaning they focused on their skiing and forgot everything else in their lives while on the slopes, researchers identified. "Flow or engagement is the manner in which you lose yourself in an activity, and are almost oblivious of all else around you," said the report. "The experience itself, such as skiing, is so enjoyable that people will do it even at a great cost, for the sake of doing it."

Head researcher Hyun-Woo Lee stated that even one-off or fewer snow outings had a positive effect on participants. Lee also noted that skiers had the edge on the happiness factor when their siblings also snowboarded, exhibiting a higher level of pleasure and involvement in their snow disciplines.

"Adult playfulness can influence people's happiness, while activities and socially convening around a sporting activity such as skiing have positive psychological outcomes and contribute to overall well-being," Lee said. "This is also true for people who only casually participate in sports."

So now it's official you can book that holiday, take that extra day off work and go to the mountains skiing more often, because it will make you a happier and healthier person. In saying that, I am sure us boarders and skiers already knew that, though now it is been proven by science.
